THE Welsh Assembly Government spent pounds 5m in five years on hire cars for use by civil servants.

Welsh Lib Dem leader Kirsty Williams used the Freedom of Information Act to extract the figures after she claimed First Minister Rhodri Morgan had failed to supply them through the normal channels to AMs.

The Assembly Government had a vehicle hire contract with Europcar UK Ltd for the past five years, available for use by staff, it was revealed.
