HARDLY a day goes by without news breaking of more public money squandered here in Wales by the Assembly Government. This time, we learn that ministers in Cardiff spent pounds 5 million on hire cars for use by civil servants over a five-year period. A whopping pounds 1 million a year, simply on hiring cars.

This information had to be prised from the Assembly Government using the Freedom of Information Act after requests for the information through normal channels apparently fell on deaf ears.

Is this a good use of public money? It doesn't sound like it. Would this be how a cost-conscious business in the private sector would behave? More likely, the ...
