Skier Michael Holmquist sails through flying crystals below a signature New Mexico sky (right). The resort's highest mountain, 12,481-foot Kachina Peak, is a formidable storm catcher. The powder lasts long on the mountain's upper ridges because you have to hike to get it (a Taos tradition).
Rene Romero (above) is a nine-year veteran of the Taos Ski Patrol and, as a Native American, one of the resort's links to the ancient culture of the region. Rene was born at Taos Pueblo, 15 miles from the Ski Valley, and still lives nearby.
