Pope John Paul II's visit to Cuba may not be a simple matter of a saint slaying an evil dragon.
Marxism and Catholicism are not as wildly opposed as they seem. In a recent Vatican encyclical the pope argued that the basic Marxist ideas of redistributing wealth to the poor are consistent with the church's teachings.
While the pope may criticize Cuba's internal human-rights violations, he is more likely to call for an end to the U.S. embargo on the island. That could be the most memorable part of the visit. He won't be the first high-level Catholic official to do so. Last month, in his first televised ...
