A REMARKABLE 19TH CENTURY CARPET WITH strong historic antecedents achieved a record sale price of $5.48m at Sotheby's first ever international auction series in the Middle East region, staged in Doha, in March. An unidentified Arab buyer successfully bid for the famous Indian pearl Baroda carpet, regarded as an important icon in India's national heritage. The surface area of the carpet is embellished with more than two million "Basra" pearls, natural seed pearls originally collected in the waters of the Gulf, as well as gold-set diamonds and hundreds of precious stones.
