AS Royal Ascot, that most glamorous of sporting fixtures, tops the sporting agenda this week, rivalry between racecourse owners has never been fiercer, with punters tightening their belts and attendance falling.
However, you wouldn't guess that Mark Elliott, chief executive of Arena Leisure, was feeling the pressure. 'I'm open to competition,' he says cheerfully. 'If Ascot's doing something, then we've got to put something on to attract people, otherwise you get complacent and wither. You can't just have six races with prize money any more.'
