Canada's largest Protestant church, the United Church of Canada, has been in turmoil since a major newspaper published an article about the church's new moderator, Bill Phipps, under the headline "Jesus is not God." In an effort to quell the controversy, the church's 85-member general council executive--at its twice-yearly meeting in Toronto November 22-23--issued a four-page summary of its deliberations. The council expressed support for Phipps, who took over the leadership in August, and rebuffed calls for his removal from the leadership.
