Half a lifetime ago my family moved to a town that is a half-hour's drive from my three places of work. We Martys always had a different mix of children, forming a mini-United Nations. To our original four children we added four others through various foster, foreign student and guest arrangements. To meet the needs of our diverse brood, we found a town with good public schools and a let-'em-run-until-nightfall neighborhood. I still live in that 100-year-old Victorian house.
