Covering more than 121,000 square miles, New Mexico has the fifth-largest area among U.S. states, trailing just Alaska, Texas, California and Montana.
But from a retailer's standpoint, the landscape might be considered more sparse than spacious.
That's because New Mexico--owing perhaps to its mountainous and arid landscape--has about 2 million residents, ranking 36th among states.
