THE FACES are different. And so are the words, the political epoch and the objective conditions.

Former president Thabo Mbeki and President Jacob Zuma were at the helm at different times, but their maiden speeches in Parliament were the same, both in content and policy direction, but different in presentation.

Zuma's maiden State of the Nation speech, as well as his reply to the debate on his speech, were ample demonstration that our new president has a different style. But, as he said himself, he was continuing the work done by his predecessors, Nelson Mandela and Mbeki.
