Another reminder of the poor security record which Maleki is trying to change came on June 12 when Sunni Arab MP Hareth al-Ubaidi was shot dead as he was leaving a mosque after Friday prayers in West Baghdad. A 15-year-old male approached him, shot him from his pistol and threw a hand grenade at the crowd which immediately killed Ubaidi, a member of the Iraqi Accordance Front (IAF) which is the largest Sunni Arab bloc in parliament, and one of his body-guards.
In a subsequent gun-battle with security forces, the young attacker was killed along with three others. It was later said the attack was the work of the Neo-Salafi group, al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia, which has ...
