A surge in the number of gray wolves in Wisconsin should reopen discussion about starting a wolf hunting season.
A hunting season should be reserved as a longer-term option, not to be employed for three to five years, and then only if prudent. But given the lead time required to develop regulations, the state should start now to prepare a hunting season as part of a comprehensive strategy to manage the wolf population.
Furthermore, Wisconsin should help make the case to retain state control of wolf management, to counter opponents who support putting the wolf back under federal protection as an endangered species.
