A thorough study of expatriate American composer Conlon Nancarrow's music is overdue. The handful of composers, scholars, and enthusiasts who have championed the cause have recognized in Nancarrow a major thinker whose ideas about musical time, demonstrated in a series of compositions, most of which were written for player piano and entitled "Rhythm Studies" or simply "Studies," belong to the truly extraordinary achievements of twentieth-century music.
