Fifteen years ago this month the brutal massacre of Palestinian refugees took place at the Beirut camps of Sabra and Shatila. International television stations relayed pictures of the bloated bodies of the murdered men, women and children as they lay decomposing in the streets. The world community was shocked. Sabra has already gone and now there is talk of the infamous Shatila being bulldozed, not because of any particular sensitivity towards the relatives of the dead, buried in a mass grave outside the camp, but because it is not in keeping with the image Lebanon is hoping to project as its multi million dollar redevelopment plan gets underway.
