Having your class measure and record the amount of precipitation that falls daily is a job young children can do as part of learning about measurement and weather. Summer is a good time to prepare to teach about recording precipitation so you can begin soon after school starts. While the youngest scientists may not understand the reason why a rain gauge must have straight sides or how a measurement scale is adjusted to correspond with the area of the opening, they will understand that they are catching and measuring the amount of rain that fell in one day.
