I recently had the good fortune to receive an invitation to present an academic paper at a small conference in Rythmeno, Crete. In preparation for the trip, I bought a travel guide published by Thomas Cook, part of the company's Travelers series.
The first thing I looked up in the guide was the University of Crete, since that was my destination. It was not listed in the index. Nor was education. Perhaps that is understandable, given that the publication was geared toward tourists, not education.
I then looked up "Jews" and "synagogues" in the index and found neither. Although I knew the university existed despite not being in the index, I was not so sure ...
