Growing output of acidic crudes in Latin America and Africa has spurred Asian refiners into gearing up to handle the heavier, more challenging grades.
"We have seen a lot more activity in Asia in the last two years than elsewhere," a technical consultant with US process technology firm Nalco told Oil Daily Friday on the sidelines of an industry gathering.
One of the keenest is Thailand's PTT Aromatics and Refining, which will next month commission an upgrade of its 150,000 barrel per day refinery to allow it to handle acidic, or high total acid number (Tan), crudes.
