This welcome and useful book is a collection of studies of selected topics focused on the material infrastructure of ancient society in Iraq. It boldly challenges on the one hand the apparent exclusivity of cuneiform-based surveys like A.L. Oppenheim's now classic Ancient Mesopotamia (1964; 1977) and, on the other, those more recent articles and monographs unduly dependent on anthropological and sociological literature for interpretative models without regard for 'relevant information from the very "native informants" they have been professing to study' (p. 305). R. Adams' (1981) fundamental studies of landscape and settlement archaeology are the outstanding exceptions. ...
