The giant oil storage buoy Brent Spar, which environmentalists Greenpeace fought to stop being dumped at sea, will be broken up and reused in Norway, its owners Shell Expro said Thursday.
The company said it had chosen a decommissioning plan by Norway's Maritime GMC and Scottish yard Wood Group Engineering to slice up the Brent Spar and use the pieces as the foundations of a new wharf.
The 445-foot-tall structure will be gradually raised in the Norwegian fjord where it is moored and the slices moved by barge to Mekjarvik, near Stavanger, where port authorities are building a new ferry terminal.
