It's no secret that home video is facing a lot more competition than it used to. Once upon a time, the only alternative to catching a film in theaters or waiting several years for it to appear on TV was going to the local video store. Then came cable, satellite TV and pay-per-view. More recent - and perhaps more fearsome - threats include digital TV, digital satellite and possibly digital cable. Video rental figures no longer show the dramatic gains they did in the '80s; in the U.S. annual rentals seem to have leveled off at roughly $8 billion or $9 billion. Worse, various reports have indicated a decline in U.S. rentals this year of between 3 percent and 9 percent.
