As many as 12 credit unions may have been victims of a scheme that effectively cleansed individuals' credit records and enabled more than two dozen individuals with blemished credit histories to qualify for membership and for loans, reports The Credit Union Journal, a CardLine sister publication. Thieves took as much as $1.6 million using credit card, personal and auto loans in the scam, according to Greensboro, N.C., Police Detective T.J. Lippa, who is heading the investigation for the Greater Triad Financial Crimes Task Force.
