A U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) report published in early May found that mercury levels in the North Pacific Ocean in 2006 were approximately 30 percent higher than those recorded in the mid-1990s.
The report's authors projected mercury levels in the North Pacific to increase 50 percent by 2050 if emission rates continue to rise.
"This study gives us a better understanding of how dangerous levels of mercury move into our air, our water and the food we eat, and shines new light on a major health threat to Americans and people all across the world," says Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson.
