Uruguay launched the second phase of its first large-scale offshore exploration licensing round this week. Six companies are expected to submit proposals by the Jul. 1 deadline, and the government hopes to sign final contracts by year's end.

The six firms were selected from applications received during the prequalification stage, which ended Apr. 30. Ancap, Uruguay's state-owned oil firm, is leading the process.

The companies invited to make bids include Brazil's Petrobras, Venezuela's PDV, Australia's BHP Billiton, Argentina's Plus-petrol and Spain's Repsol YPF.
