EchoStar Communications, perhaps looking over its shoulder at the rental strategy of rival PrimeStar, has decided to offer customers the option of renting the hardware for its DISH Network DBS satellite service.
In the past, DISH subscribers purchased the dish and receiving equipment for $199 along with a one-year subscription to a 40-channel programming package. Now EchoStar is offering the rented set-top box, a warranty and installation for $99 and the 40-channel package for a monthly fee of $29.99.
