An 'urban laboratory' takes root in the Arizona desert.

Anne and I checked into the commune at 4:03 p.m.

"I don't mean to rush you," the sweet-faced girl with the studded tongue says, standing behind the counter, "but the last tour of the day is already started, and you could still catch up with it."

We're not here for the tour. I explain that we're staying the night, and hand over a credit card. Seventy dollars later, and we're in, save for the room key. The room key isn't behind the counter.

"It's probably in the room already," she says. "You could have Joe show you the room while you're on the tour."

OK, then, we say, we'll catch up ...
