The direct shipping controversy has been a thorn in the side of California wine producers for some time now. Wine producers who ship wine to out-of-state customers have had to navigate a maze of laws and regulations specific to each state. "It's like negotiating with 50 different countries," said David Jones, president of Family Winemakers of California. "The current legal situation is a negotiating nightmare and creates a bad situation for wine producers, beverage shippers, and, ultimately, the consumers who want these products."
