Duncan Brothers (Bangladesh) Ltd., an associate of Lawrie Group Plc., is a well-known name in Bangladesh. Jane Pettigrew reports on the company's activities and recent developments.
Walter Duncan, a Scotsman, arrived in Calcutta in 1858 to start a new business in cotton piece goods. In 1860-61, he became involved in tea when a business acquaintance, who acted as agent for two Cachar tea gardens, had to leave India for health reasons and left the running of the business in Duncan's hands.
As the cotton piece goods business dwindled, the company turned its attention more towards tea and took over new gardens in Dooars. By 1890, the agency was handling 12 tea ...
