SHARK experts have expressed dismay at global media reports likening great white sharks to human serial killers.

Based on research at Seal Island in False Bay, the articles have referred to the sharks' "serial intent" and said they hunt "like Hannibal Lecter".

Several researchers have criticised this portrayal as well as an article that appeared in the Cape Times yesterday.

"Comparing sharks to serial killers is very questionable science and an irresponsible portrayal of sharks," said Lesley Rochat, director of education and awareness at the Save Our Seas Shark Centre in Kalk Bay.
