Your April 4 editorial about the fate of Palestinian refugees comes down, it seems to me, to these two sentences:
"No one can deny the difficulty of life for these people, or fail to sympathize with their desire to return to land that once belonged to their ancestors.... But when all is said and done Israel must act to protect its own interests, whether the world agrees with it or not."
I am reminded of the many discussions I've heard about the famous saying of Hillel the Elder: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am for myself alone, what am I?" Almost always, the argument is over which of the two takes precedence.
