Upon the sudden death of her father last month, Mary Akor considered dropping out of Grandma's Marathon. She felt overwhelmed by grief, and she wasn't certain she could train properly under her heavy emotional load.
When Akor thought about it, though, she came to believe she could find comfort in Duluth. The two-time defending champion couldn't help but smile Friday as she thought about the gracious, uplifting crowds of spectators she would see during today's 26.2-mile race. While she still mourns her father, Akor hopes to celebrate his memory by becoming the second runner to win three consecutive Grandma's Marathons. ...
