VATICAN CITY -- In two final addresses to participants in the Synod of Bishop for America, Pope John Paull II summarized the meeting's main points, praised its participants and assessed its potential impact.
The pope was present for much of the Nov. 16-Dec. 12 gathering, attended by 297 cardinals, archbishops, bishops and others -- most of whom made speeches addressing regional concerns of mutual interest.
Speaking in French, Spanish, Portuguese and English, Pope John Paul said that throughout the proceedings, he had been "struck by a constant call ... the invitation to solidarity."
