Lay ministers at the University of Minnesota's Newman Center have been told to stop preaching at Mass and to accept supervision by the priest who serves as the center's director. The vicar general of the St. Paul and Minneapolis archdiocese presented the instructions in a Jan. 16 meeting with the staff.
The three full-time lay ministers were also ordered to stop using "indirect channels of communication as a means to manipulate or pressure one another," which an archdiocesan official said referred to using the Internet to publicize disputes at the center. They also were ordered to "provide accurate teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church."
