Travel through the Arctic was impossible without sledges to carry supplies, and dogs to pull those sledges. Carefully bred through several generations, the most common Arctic dogs were the Alaskan malamute and the Siberian husky. These wolflike animals had short coats, usually with a mixture of black, gray, and white hair that was stiff to the touch. These clogs became famous for their keen sense of smell and incredible strength as well as for their endurance and faithfulness.
