THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR, fought from 1936 to 1939, involved foreign intervention on a massive scale, primarily from the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy. With the victory of Francisco Franco (1892-1975)'s Nationalist movement, which had relied on German and Italian military aid, many observers expected Spain to enter future wars on the side of the Axis. The political history of the early Franco Regime, including the relationship between Spain and the New Order, as the Nazis referred to the vision they had of a Europe remade in their model, has been studied extensively over the past two decades.
