DEFENDING your players is one thing, but South Africa coach Peter de Villiers stood accused of sheer lunacy when he insisted Schalk Burger should not have been sin-binned for gouging against the Lions.
Flanker Burger, making his 50th Test appearance, was caught by New Zealand touch judge Bryce Lawrence intentionally sticking his fingers in the left eye of Lions winger Luke Fitzgerald in the opening minute.
The graphic images were captured on film and Burger was ordered to appear in front of a disciplinary panel last night.
