David Letterman welcomed Sarah Palin on a visit to New York City by musing on her daughter's man trouble: Alex Rodriguez had "knocked [her] up" during a Yankees game, and Eliot Spitzer was after her too. The daughter that Sarah Palin was traveling with was 14-year-old Willow, which made Letterman's lines creepy as well as gross. He apologized twice, with increasing vehemence, if not conviction: first, saying he meant to mock 18-year-old Bristol; then, claiming he had not known that any daughter had been with Palin. It was a ratings stunt tawdry even by the standards of late night, and some liberal arbiters--Howard Kurtz, NOW--called him on it. ...
