Introduction
There has been a sharp increase in the number of intercountry adoptions over the past three decades (Kane, 1993; Selman, 2002) and a parallel decrease in the number of national adoptions of young children (Hoksbergen and Laak, 2005). Offering children for intercountry adoption has been used as a solution to poverty and child abandonment in developing nations and countries undergoing economic transition where there is poor family support and a lack of child welfare services (Browne et al, 2006).
