A record number of Los Angeles County residents were at least three months behind on their mortgage payments during the first quarter of 2009, but the number of homeowers actually in foreclosure declined slightly, a market tracker said Wednesday.
Both the flood of notices of default and the drop in foreclosures resulted from lenders playing catch-up after a temporary lull in activity late last year, said San Diego-based MDA DataQuick.
During the first quarter, 29,981 county residents received default notices, up 38percent from the 20,339 recorded a year earlier, DataQuick said.
