In the fall of 2006, a relatively unknown Division III middle distance runner from Willamette University moved to Eugene to join Oregon Track Club Elite, a fledgling group of post-collegiate runners.
At the time, Nick Symmonds chuckled about the Nike contract that obligated him to run in the Prefontaine Classic, a task he said he would gladly fulfill after previously begging officials to let him into the meet.
