Like most European machine tool companies, Swiss and German grinding machine builders inside the Korber Schleifring ("grinding ring") group face a difficult 2009. General manager Dr. Ralf Kammermeier said in Thun, Switzerland, earlier this month that 2009 orders were down some 20-30% compared with the same period in 2008. "The crash came to us in August and September last year. In total, we do have better first-quarter results in 2009 when compared with other builders." His comments came at a time when other European machine tool builders had experienced a drop in orders of 30-40%--some by as much as 70% when compared with 2008.
