This year Yom Kippur, the Sabbath of Sabbaths, actually does fall on Shabbos. Whilst from a strictly halachic point of view the weekly Shabbos is in fact a holier day than Yom Kippur, Yom Kippur does in at least one respect override Shabbos in that we fast on Yom Kippur even when it falls on Shabbos, something ordinarily not permitted on Shabbos.
"On the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement; it shall be a holy gathering to you; and you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. And you shall do no work in that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the Lord your God.
