Max Lerner, the author of numerous articles for the Nation and the New Republic, as well as several books, including America as Civilization and Nine Scorpions in a Bottle: Great Judges and Cases of the Supreme Court, began work on a book about Thomas Jefferson in 1957. He kept returning to the project until his death in 1992, whereupon Robert Schmuhl edited the book and saw it through to publication in 1996. The focus of this concise work is not to present the reader with a detailed elaboration of the developments that shaped Jefferson's complex personality and his response to the context in which he acted out his political career.
