Despite a decrease of 2 percent (5.7 percent adjusted for inflation) in charitable giving last year, a panel of local leaders in the philanthropic field nevertheless urged nonprofit organizations yesterday to be even more aggressive in their quest for funding.

"Just because the economy is tanking and foundation assets are down, this isn't time for nonprofits to pull back," advised Sylvia Fields, executive director of the Eden Hall Foundation. "You have more work to do. It's important that you do your homework and research to find out what funders want ahead of time so you're on target."
