Hollywood Park officials were bracing for the worst even before their 70th spring-summer meet opened last week. It didn't take long for the first shoe to drop.
A severe horse shortage in California, caused in part by owners leaving the state to run for more lucrative purses elsewhere, forced track management to cancel live racing Thursday when racing secretary Martin Panza could not fill the eight-race card even after delaying the draw by two days.
It's believed to be the first time in Southern California racing history a track canceled racing because of insufficient entries.
