The return of renewed violence in Iraq after a period of relative stability is not impetuous - rather, it is the application of carefully considered policies.

This recent increase in bloodshed is sparking fears that the country could return to a situation where such attacks happen on an almost daily basis, after a substantial decrease in violence since 2008.

The most obvious explanation for the fighting is the internal power struggle that has raged since the US and its allies brought about the downfall of the former regime under president Saddam Hussain in 2003.
