In recent decades feminist scholars have drawn attention to the importance of welfare state policies for women's economic autonomy. They have argued that the welfare state powerfully affects the life chances of women relative to men, as well as ameliorating class inequalities. This insight has substantially extended the study of gender inequality and the welfare state, particularly research informed by a comparative perspective. (1)
