A friend of mine recently told me that after her daughter toured the Jewish sites of Eastern Europe, including a number of former concentration camps, she had a new appreciation for Jewish survival and the ways the Holocaust shaped her family history. To this young woman and all young adult readers, I'd like to introduce the Israeli writer Aharon Appelfeld. Appelfeld is a child survivor of the Holocaust and his books should be on every older teenager's summer reading list. He has published over 40 works of fiction, 15 of which have appeared in English.
