Three Japanese academic institutions--Tohoku University, the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Osaka University--have jointly developed a titanium-based (Ti-based) metallic glass suitable for use in living organisms, and prototyped an artificial finger joint made with this material.
Tohoku University's Institute for Materials Research optimized the composition and other details of the Ti-based metallic glass so that it is suitable for use as a biomedical material.
