ACADEMICS and the intelligentsia were correctly accused of having been part of the national problem in Uganda during the Idi Amin era. It is said they failed to challenge that dictator on his excesses, initially because they were, or hoped to be, beneficiaries of some of those excesses, and later because they were afraid to be killed by Amin's hit squads.
