Alcoholic drinks have been brewed and consumed for centuries in Tanzania, East Africa. However, the number of studies done on the prevalence of alcohol use is limited.
In 1978, Njelekela carried out a study among the adult population of eight randomly selected villages in Iringa District. In this survey 86% of the men and 79% of the women ever drank alcohol (Partanen, 1990). In a 1990 community survey which was held in both rural and urban populations in Dar Es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Dodoma and Iringa (Kilonzo, 1992), 65% of residents in rural areas and 51% of residents in urban areas declared that they did not abstain from alcohol.
